It was a great St. Patrick's Day weekend for the CU Running Team. 360 people joined the CU Racing Team in Effingham, IL for the 2013 Runnin of the Irish 5 and 10k. Ashley Simmons, my mom (Isabel Smith), and myself went to Effingham to duel high winds, fierce competition and unrelenting hills. It was a windy day and the course consisted mostly of a scenic path through woods outside of Effingham. I took out with the eventual winner of the 10k Mark Turchyn (Urbana, IL) and ran with him for the first two miles before I had to slow down the pace due to the possibility of cardiac arrest at mile 3. I finished 2nd with a time of 36.10. Ashley took out strong in the 10k and ran with the 2nd place female until around the 5k mark. Ashley finished 3rd with a 10k PR of 45.33! Isabel Smith ran the 5k and finished strong in 34.29. Isabel was delighted with the results in her first time racing in a while. We all enjoyed Effingham's scenic trail, live music, outstanding facilities, and free massage. In an exercise of will power , we all somehow we all managed to stay away from the free post-race beverages! A good time was had by all and I would most definitely recommend this race to anyone. . Hope everyone got out for a good run on this Sunday. Here is a motivational photo I like that sums up the attitude I have towards being a runner. Find the motivation to be a runner today. You won't regret it.
